Up the first beat it was 25, then 30, then 35, then... more. They were tacking their way around (going to the leeward mark would have required an insta-gybe at this point). We were a few boatlengths behind them and luckily were only reaching and not in the middle of a manouvre at the time. 52kt read from a station maybe 500 yards downwind from the spot where the boat went down It was a gust of 52 that took the New Wave down.
