Hi,

My wife and I are currently looking for a boat. I haven't sailed for 20 years and I want to get back in the water. I found a 1979 J24 on Craigslist (the link is below) for $3500. Sounds like a great deal and I'm wondering if you agree (with the understanding that u haven't seen the boat).

It would be great to have a solid boat and the option to race if we want.

Any insight yo could offer is greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,

Bryan

I have raced both the J/80 and the J/24. I much prefer the J/80. Unlike the J/24, there is much less difference between an old and a new boat - which all makes for better racing.
I think the J/24 is easier to tow and launch. The J/80 has an over spec'd mast which is heavy. You can erect the mast with a jocky pole but the weight and roller forestay make it more difficult.
On the water in non planing conditions, there's not a big difference in boat speed, indeed with a non overlapping headsail it makes the J/80 tricky in light conditions to do well.
Needing only 4 crew is better and there is less emphasis on maxing crew weight because the J/80 has less beam than the J/24
In a breeze is where the J/80 exels. 14 knots down hill is nothing. A Melges planes earlier but as the wind pressure builds, so the J/80 becomes as faster or faster; I have overtaken Melges 24 but that may be because they went the wrong way.
Don't try putting the spinnaker up in 46 knots, I did, the crew were convinced I was trying to kill them but did we go fast! That was until we tried to gybe!
The J/80 is a tough simple boat which is economical to race competitively

It was a gust of 52 that took the New Wave down. Up the first beat it was 25, then 30, then 35, then... more. They were tacking their way around (going to the leeward mark would have required an insta-gybe at this point). We were a few boatlengths behind them and luckily were only reaching and not in the middle of a manouvre at the time. 52kt read from a station maybe 500 yards downwind from the spot where the boat went down

i'd bet it was probably a chinese gybe...filling the cockpit with water, boat being dragged sideways, water flooding the cabin....sorry to hear of this.

Hi...I was using a GoPro helmet cam. They come with a variety of attachments, including a strap set up so you can wear the camera like a headlamp. I rigged a safety line to my pfd and just let it run. www,goprocamera.com.
